I’ve just recently moved into a new house and came up with some serious wifi issues. The issue being that I couldn’t get a reliable connection in our new office. Our old office had a hard wired connection so this was never a problem. However, in the new house we could not get a cable through to that room without doing some serious DIY work. I like to keep things easy, I’m efficient (lazy) that way. I already had a Belkin USB adapter that I had been using with my media center PC in the old house. It did its job just fine, but it was fairly close to the router.  I tried this adapter out on my office PC. I was able to get a connection but it was FAR from reliable, sometimes losing connection all together. I then tried a router coupled with a 7dbi aerial to connect to the main router. This worked slightly better but was very directional. A slight bump of the router was all it took to lose connection. Most routers wont connect in this fashion unless you’re ready to part with some serious cash for a decent router. I happened to have this particular router lying around from a previous review.

So I was stuck with a lousy connection. I needed to find something fast as I was stuck in the lounge with my laptop which was not very productive! I jumped on google and searched for a good few hours scouring review after review and found many adapters. I just wasn’t convinced that any of them would work. Eventually I came across the Alfa AWUS036H on amazon. A lot of customers on Amazon had left very promising reviews on this item. I checked out a few of the reviews and decided to go ahead and order it. I was a little skeptical as it was a very decent price.

The box arrived a couple days later and I was eager to give it a try. I installed the drivers and plugged it in. I had excellent signal right off the bat to my own network. No dropouts at all and sustainable speeds from 36mbps to 54mbps. A massive improvement over my original 5mbps! I cant tell the difference between my current wireless connection and the hard wired connection I had before. This is how wireless should work. To further illustrate the power of this little adapter, I am now picking up eleven wireless network connections from my office where I could only see three with my old belkin wireless usb adapter. The reason for this is the device amplifies its wireless signal and is rated at 1000mw! My router at home is 70mw. The great thing about this adapter is it is a USB adapter which means you can plug it into any desktop or laptop computer. I have not had the chance to use it on my laptop yet but I am sure I will have no trouble finding a connection on my travels.
